Manzano advances to finals of Olympic 1500 meters

LONDON -- Former Longhorn Leo Manzano is within reach of his first Olympic medal. Manzano automatically qualified for the finals of the 1500 meters when he posted a time of 3:42.94 in the first heat of Sunday's semifinals. He placed fourth, but just missed overtaking Asbel Kiprop of Kenya (3:42.92) and Mekonnen Gebremedhin of Ethiopia (3:42.93). Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria won the hotly-contested heat in 3:42.94. Manzano, who made the semifinals of the 1500 in the 2008 Olympics, is one of 12 competitors headed to the finals, which are scheduled for 2:15 p.m. CDT Tuesday. He is the first Longhorn ever to make a 1500-meter final in the Olympics. Abdalaati Iguider of Morocco had the top time in the semifinals, winning the second heat in 3:33.99. American Matt Centrowitz also qualified for the finals. He was fifth in the second heat with a time of 3:34.90. Click here for complete results.
