Goodwin finishes 10th in Olympics long jump final

Aug. 4, 2012

LONDON -- Current Longhorn Marquise Goodwinfinished 10th in the long jump in his first-ever appearance in the Olympics.

Goodwin leapt 7.80 meters (25-7.25) on his second attempt in Sunday's finals to put him in ninth and one spot from three more attempts (the top eight of 12 after three tries earn three more attempts)

However, Goodwin went 7.76 (25-5.50) in his third attempt. Henry Frayne of Australia moved into ninth on his final attempt (7.85m).

Greg Rutherford of Great Britain won the event with a jump of 8.31 (27-3.25). Mitchell Watt of Australia captured the silver medal with a mark of 8.16 (26-9.25).

Goodwin's teammate Will Claye earned the bronze medal by going 8.12 (26-7.75) on his fourth attempt. Click here to view the complete results.

Goodwin needed just one attempt in Friday's qualifying round to reach the finals. The senior-to-be leapt 8.11m (26-7.25) in his first-ever attempt in Olympic competition. He posted the top mark in Group A and was one of just two automatic qualifiers for the finals.

Goodwin, a two-time NCAA Outdoor long jump champion, reached the Olympics by winning the event at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.

He leapt a career-best 8.33m (27-4.00) on the final attempt at the event to earn a spot on the Olympic Team. Goodwin's Trials victory followed his impressive junior campaign at Texas in which he won the NCAA Outdoor title with a then personal-best mark of 8.23m (27-0).

Goodwin was the first collegian to win both the Olympic Trials and the NCAA Outdoors long jump competition in the same year since 1960. He was also the first-ever Longhorn to reach the long jump final at the Olympics.

Three former Longhorns are still competing in the Olympics.

Leo Manzano reached Sunday's semifinals (2:15 p.m. CDT) of the 1500 meters posting an automatic qualifying time of 3:37.00 in Friday's preliminary round.

Samyr Laine will take part in the qualifying round of the triple jump on Tuesday and Trey Hardee begins his quest for a medal in the decathlon Wednesday.
