Horns gear up for second half of Olympics

Aug. 2, 2012

LONDON -- The Olympics have been underway for just over one week and now the spotlight will shift to track and field.

Five former and current Texas Men's Track and Field student-athletes will look to etch their names in Longhorn lore over the course of the next seven days.

Dylan Armstrong (shot put), Marquise Goodwin (long jump) and Leo Manzano (1500 meters) will be in action Friday.

Armstrong, who finished fourth at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, is one of the favorites at this year's Games. He was first at the Canadian Olympic Trials with a toss of 21.29m (69-10.25). Armstrong was the runner-up in the shot at the 2011 World Indoor Championships

He will compete at 4 a.m. (CDT) in the qualifying round. The finals are scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Goodwin, who is also a member of the Longhorn football team, finished first at June's U.S. Olympic Trials. He posted a career-best mark of 8.33m (27-4.25) on the final attempt of the competition. Goodwin, a senior-to-be, also won the long jump at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was the first collegian to win both the Olympic Trials and the NCAA Outdoors long jump competition in the same year since 1960.

Manzano was also victorious at the U.S. Olympic Trials, posting a time of 3:35.75. He made the 2008 Olympic team, finishing 12th in the semifinals of the 1500m.

Goodwin (1:50 p.m.) and Manzano (2 p.m.) will be competing at the same time Friday in preliminary rounds. The long jump finals are set for Sunday, as are the semifinals of the 1500.

Former Horns Trey Hardee (decathlon) and Samyr Laine (triple jump) will participate next week.

Hardee finished second at the Olympic Trials and will be competing in his second Olympics. He also won the event at the World Championships in 2009 and 2011. The decathlon is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

Laine, who holds the Haitian national record in the triple jump with a mark of 17.39m (56-9.25), will be competing in his first Olympics. He will compete in qualifying action at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.
