July 14, 2009
Three men's track and field athletes, senior Mike Carmody, junior Brandon Drenon and sophomore Kenny Greaves, have been named to the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2009 All-Academic team. It is the first USTFCCCA All-Academic honor for each athlete. Drenon led the group with a 3.875 GPA in radio-television-film. During the 2009 season, he finished third in the shot put and fourth in the discus at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships before qualifying for the NCAA meet in the discus. Carmody, a graduate student, posted a 3.71 GPA in advertising. He placed fourth at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in the 800 meters and just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships after finishing fifth in the 800 at the NCAA Midwest Regional. Indoors, Carmody finished fifth in the 800 meters at the Big 12 Championships to help Texas win its fourth consecutive indoor conference title. Greaves, a first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection, notched a 3.71 GPA in civil engineering. He just missed All-Big 12 honors during the outdoor season with a ninth-place finish in the decathlon at the conference meet. The USTFCCCA honors Division I individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
