July 11, 2012

AUSTIN, Texas -- Three Texas Men's Track & Field athletes earned medals at the North America-Central America and Caribbean Under-23 (NACAC U-23) Championships in Guanajuato, Mexico this past weekend.

Recent graduate Jacob Thormaehlen and incoming transfer Kyle Merber each collected gold medals while Hayden Baillio was a bronze medalist.

Thormaehlen came off of his All-American senior season to win the shot put. He had a top throw of 65-2 (19.86m) to finish first in the competition. He had the winning throw by nearly two feet as Mexico's Stephen Saenz was second with a throw of 19.31m (63-4.25).

Finishing third in the shot put was Baillio, who will be entering his senior season. He recorded a mark of 19.21m (63-0.25) for the only athlete to throw over 19 meters.

Merber will be joining the Longhorns as a graduate student after running at Columbia University for the first three years of his career. He won the 1,500m run with a time of 3:51.61, beating out Charles Philibert-Thiboutot of Canada (3:52.00) and Riley Masters of the U.S. (3:52.15).
