Manson, Manzano place third at USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Texas junior Andra Manson (Brenham, Texas) took third place in the high jump, and sophomore Leonel Manzano (Marble Falls, Texas) followed suit in the 1,500 meters Sunday at the 2006 AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Carroll Stadium. UT finishes the meet with an impressive total of three top-five finishes for the weekend with senior Brian Robison's fourth-place finish on Friday in the shot put. Manson, the 2004 NCAA outdoor high jump champion, placed third in the high jump with a top clearance of 7-4.25, which he cleared on his second attempt. Notably, Manson finished the event as the top NCAA Division I finisher and defeated USC's Jesse Williams, the 2005 and 2006 NCAA outdoor high jump champion, who only managed a seventh-place clearance of 7-0.25. Manzano challenged Bernard Lagat, the American record holder in the 1,500 meters, and nearly defeated him, finishing only two-tenths of a second behind Lagat. Manzano took third in 3:39.49, finishing behind Lagat (3:39.29) and Gabriel Jennings (3:39.42) as the top collegiate runner in the race. Junior Derek Randall (Beeville, Texas) put a successful ending on a tremendous initial season as a Longhorn, taking 11th in the discus with a toss of 181-11 (55.45m).
