Nine Longhorns to compete at 2012 Olympic Trials
June 21, 2012 EUGENE, Ore. -- The Texas Men's Track & Field program will have eight current and former members competing for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team and one for the Jamaican Olympic Team at each country's 2012 Olympic Trials. The U.S. holds its Trials beginning today and lasting through July 1 at historic Hayward Stadium on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene. Current Longhorns Isaac Murphy (decathlon), Marquise Goodwin (long jump), Hayden Baillio (shot put) and Ryan Crouser (discus) will be joined in Eugene by former UT student-athletes Trey Hardee (decathlon), Jacob Thormaehlen (shot put), Andra Manson (high jump) and Leo Manzano (1500m). Rising Texas senior Keiron Stewart will compete to represent the Jamaican Olympic Team in the 110 hurdles at the Jamaican Senior National Championships in Kingston. The event runs from June 28-July 1 with Stewart's 110m hurdles preliminaries and finals taking place on June 30 and July 1. Goodwin enters Trials fresh off taking home the national title in the long jump at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He won the meet after leaping an Olympic A Standard mark of 8.23m (27-0), the eighth-longest jump in the world this year. Murphy, ranked as one of the top collegiate decathletes in the nation through much of 2012, earned First Team All-America honors with a seventh-place performance at NCAA Outdoors. His 8,067-point performance to win the decathlon at Texas Relays automatically qualified him to compete in this year's Trials. Fellow All-American Thormaehlen, who recently completed his eligibility at Texas, netted qualification for the Olympic Trials when he threw a personal-best, A Standard mark of 20.31m (66-07.75) to win the shot put at the Big 12 Championships. Each event with the exception of the decathlon will have one or more qualifying rounds to earn a place in the event finals.
