Men's Track and Field earns two bids to NCAA Outdoor Championships

AUSTIN, Texas -- The third-ranked University of Texas men's track and field team garnered two NCAA automatic bids and charted a season-best time in the 4x100-meter relay Friday to highlight the first day of competition at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.

Sophomore Derek Randall (Beeville, Texas) enjoyed a breakthrough performance Friday, as he claimed the discus with the fourth-best mark in UT history. Randall, who had not won an event this season before Friday, shattered his personal best in the discus with a toss of 200-7 to win the event and earn an automatic berth into next month's NCAA Outdoor Championships. Randall climbs to No. 4 on UT's all-time list of top discus throwers. Notably, his mark would have easily topped teammate Brian Robison's Big 12 title-winning mark of 195-10. Robison also automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships by taking fourth in the discus with a toss of 186-11.

Texas enjoyed a productive first day of the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, as the Horns advanced a number of student-athletes to Saturday's finals. Utilizing a new 4x100-meter relay order, the Texas quartet of seniors Trey Griffin (Lockhart, Texas), Ronald Hill (Walnut, Calif.), freshman Jamaal Charles (Port Arthur, Texas) and senior Quincy Boles (Harker Heights, Texas) posted a season-best time of 39.25 to move on to Saturday's finals.

Sophomores Kyle Miller (Katy, Texas), Erik Stanley (Spring, Texas) and Leonel Manzano (Marble Falls, Texas) each moved on to Saturday's 1500-meter finals, as did Charles, Boles and senior Trey Hardee (Birmingham, Ala.) in the 100 meters. Hardee posted a personal-best time of 10.28 to move on to the finals. Charles also added a finals berth in Saturday's 200 meters with a wind-aided qualifying time of 20.69.

Sophomore Hamza Deyaf (Richardson, Texas) clocked 52.11 in the 400-meter hurdles to earn a spot in Saturday's final.
