AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 8 Texas Men’s Track and Field team travels to Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA West Preliminary Round. 
 
TEXAS TRAVELS TO WEST PRELIM MEET
The Texas men’s track and field team will travel to the 2011 NCAA West Preliminary meet in Eugene, Ore. from Thursday, May 26 to Saturday, May 28 at Hayward Field. The three-day meet will feature the top 48 athletes in each event from the west region as determined by the NCAA. For the Longhorns, action begins at 2:00 p.m.  CT on Thursday with the long jump.
 
TEXAS TIDBITS
Texas has been the NCAA Outdoor runner-up on three different occasions (1972, ’88, ’97) … the Horns have finished in the Top 10 seven times under head coach Bubba Thornton and in the Top Five four times … Texas has recorded Top 10 finishes in three of the last six years … UT is led by sophomore Big 12 long jump champion and defending NCAA champion Marquise Goodwin, whose mark of 26-9.75 ranks fourth nationally and second in the west region and sophomore thrower Hayden Baillio whose shot put throw of 64-0.25 ranks third nationally and second in the region… also ranking in the west region’s top 10 are sophomore Keiron Stewart in the 110m hurdles, senior Jamal Wilson in the high jump and triple jump, freshman Mark Jackson in the triple jump, junior Jacob Thormaehlen in the shot put and the 4x100 and 4x400m relays ... making their first appearances at a preliminary or regional meet are D.J. Monroe, CJ Jessett, Ryan Dohner, Brock Simmons, Rory Tunningley, Jake Wohlford, Isaac Murphy, Mark Thomas and Emerson Sanders.
 
25 QUALIFIERS
The Texas men qualified 25 entries for the NCAA West Region Championships. Eight Texas athletes will be competing in two events - Alex Williams and D.J. Monroe in the 100 meters and 4x100m relay, Trevante Rhodes in the 200 meters and 4x100m relay, Danzell Fortson and Andre Thomas in the 400 meters and 4x400m relay, Keiron Stewart in the 110m hurdles and 4x400m relay, Jamal Wilson in the high jump and triple jump and Marquise Goodwin in the long jump and 4x100m relay.
 
DECATHLETES QUALIFY FOR NCAA MEET
Texas decathletes Isaac Murphy and Kenny Greaves have both punched their tickets to the NCAA Championship meet in Des Moines, Iowa. Both multi-eventers ranked in the top 24 on the national descending list, securing them a spot at this year's NCAA Championships. Murphy boasts a personal-best of 7,681 points, which places him 10th in the nation while Greaves' PR of 7,535 points at the Big 12 Championships bumped him up to 15th.  Texas, along with Georgia, are the only two schools to have two decathletes qualify for the national meet. 
 
DUAL-SPORT ATHLETES IN THE 4X100
Marquise Goodwin and D.J. Monroe, who also star on the football gridiron, will be running the third and fourth legs of the Texas 4x100-meter relay. The relay of Alex Williams, Trevante Rhodes, Goodwin and Monroe currently ranks as the seventh-fastest in the nation and fourth fastest in the west region with a season-best time of 39.29.
 
DOUBLE DIP
The Longhorns will have two competitors in eight events this weekend, the 100 meters, 400 meters, 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters, 110m hurdles, pole vault, long jump, triple jump and shot put. Alex Williams and D.J. Monroe will represent the Horns in the 100 meters, Danzell Fortson and Andre Thomas in the 400 meters, Patrick McGregor, CJ Jessett and Logan Gonzales in the 1,500 meters, Ryan Dohner and Brock Simmons in the 5,000 meters, Keiron Stewart and Jake Wohlford in the 110m hurdles, Kenny Greaves and Mark Thomas in the pole vault, Marquise Goodwin and Emerson Sanders in the long jump, Jamal Wilson and Mark Jackson in the triple jump and Hayden Baillio and Jacob Thormaehlen in the shot put.
 
RELAYS
Texas will be represented in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays this weekend. The 4x100, which is scheduled to be run by Alex Williams, Trevante Rhodes, Marquise Goodwin and D.J. Monroe, holds the fourth-fastest time in the region at 39.29. The 4x400 is ninth the region at 3:06.93 and is scheduled to be run by Danzell Fortson, Andre Thomas, Keiron Stewart and Isaac Murphy.
 
BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
The Longhorns tallied 103.5 points to finish as runners up at the 2011 Big 12 Championships. Winning a Big 12 title for the second-straight year was Marquise Goodwin in the long jump with a collegiate-best jump of 26-9.75. Texas also had a host of athletes place second in their respective events with Patrick McGregor in the 1,500 meters, Jamal Wilson in the high jump, Hayden Baillio in the shot put and Kenny Greaves in the decathlon. On the weekend, 18 Longhorn athletes earned 26 All-Big 12 honors. 
 
RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS
Nine of the Texas athletes entered in the NCAA West Prelims have earned All-America honors in their careers, seven of which have garnered first-team honors. Marquise Goodwin (2010 outdoor long jump) and Danzell Fortson (2008 indoor DMR) have NCAA titles to their names. Goodwin and Fortson are both three-time All-Americans, tied for the most of the group. Also returning All-Americans are Alex Williams, Logan Gonzales, Keiron Stewart, Hayden Baillio and Jacob Thormaehlen, as well as Jamal Wilson and Mark Jackson who earned second-team honors during the 2011 indoor season.
