Men's Track and Field lands 12 on Academic All-Big 12 Team
DALLAS -- Twelve members of the University of Texas men's track and field team were selected to the 2006 Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field Team, as announced Wednesday by the conference. Earning first-team selections were senior Tomas Finol (Spring, Texas), an economics major; senior Mark Floreani (Chicago, Ill.), a business economics major; junior Donovan Kilmartin (Eagle, Idaho), a petroleum engineering major; junior Brandon McFarling (College Station, Texas), an accounting major; senior Andrew Middleton (College Station, Texas), a government major; senior Joe Thorne (Chamblee, Ga.), a health promotion and fitness major; senior Jon Von Letscher (Austin, Texas), a radio-television-film major, and junior Ryan Wilson (Wichita, Kan.) an accounting major. Four Longhorns - junior Alan Bean (Dalhart, Texas), a kinesiology; sophomore Dustin Bynum (Corpus Christi, Texas), a business major; sophomore Leonel Manzano (Marble Falls, Texas), a Spanish major and junior Matt Munoz (Kingwood, Texas), an economics major - earned selections to the second team. The men's Academic All-Big 12 track and field team consisted of 82 first-team members and 26 second-team selections. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a minimum 3.20 GPA, while second-team members hold a GPA between 3.0 and 3.19. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher - either cumulative or during the two previous semesters - and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests to be eligible for a nomination to the team. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Seniors who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. Texas begins competition at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, May 12 at Baylor's Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex in Waco.
