PHILADELPHIA -- Sophomore Marshevet Hooker's (San Antonio, Texas) victory in the 100 meters headlined Texas' final day of competition at the 111th Penn Relays Carnival. Despite rainy conditions, Hooker was able to equal the nation's fastest time with an 11.24. Also, the men's 4x100-meter relay improved on their qualifying time in finishing fifth with a regional 40.23.
"I thought Marshevet ran an excellent race today," said Texas women's head coach Bev Kearney. "I was impressed with how she kept her composure despite running in bad weather."
In other women's action, junior Melaine Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) finished third in the 100-meter hurdles in a personal-best and regional-qualifying 13.21. The 4x400-meter relay team placed fourth with a regional 3:31.83.
"We just didn't run as well as we are capable of in the relays," added Kearney. "We've got one more opportunity against these teams, at the NCAA Championship, and we'll need to keep working if we want to accomplish our goals."
On the men's side, the 4xMile relay finished fourth with a time of 16:26.70. In the field events, both sophomore Andra Manson (Brenham, Texas) and senior Nick Talley (Amarillo, Texas) cleared 6-9.50 to tie for sixth place, while freshman Joseph Davis (San Antonio, Texas) posted a leap of 47-0.50 in the triple jump to finish in 11th place.
"The weather made it difficult on the field-event performers," said Texas men's head coach Bubba Thornton. "It is great to be involved in this level of competition and it should help us as we prepare for the conference championship."
At the Rice Twilight, the Longhorn men produced five top-three finishes led by sophomore Alan Bean's (Dalhart, Texas) victory in the 400-meter hurdles (53.35). Senior Jay Fuquay (Arlington, Texas) finished third in the same race with a time of 55.45. Freshman Joel Hargett (Conroe, Texas) tied for second in the high jump with a clearance of 6-8, while redshirt-freshman John Rouse (Kaufman, Texas) placed third in the hammer with a throw of 179-9.
In women's action, freshman Alandra Sherman (Houston, Texas) won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.11. Junior Laura Altman (Houston, Texas) was also victorious in the 3,000-meter steeplechase behind an 11:17.03. The Longhorns went two-three in the pole vault as both freshmen Ashley Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas) and Anne Phillips (Fort Worth, Texas) notched regional clearances of 12-5.50.
Up next, both teams will prepare for the Big 12 Championship, which is being held in Manhattan, Kan. beginning on Thursday, May 12.
