Men's Track and Field preview: Texas Twilight
AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 5 Texas returns to Mike A. Myers Stadium this weekend to host the Texas Twilight meet on Saturday, April 22. The meet begins at 2 p.m. CDT with the men's hammer throw and the women's javelin throw and continues through the evening. The event wraps up at 8:20 p.m. with the running of the men's and women's 4x400-meter relays. Texas will host Texas-San Antonio, Texas-Pan American, Texas State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Oklahoma. Texas hits the track for its first meet since the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays held April 5-8 at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Senior Trey Hardee (Birmingham, Ala.) highlighted the meet by setting a new collegiate decathlon record with a final score of 8,465 points. The distance-medley relay quartet of senior Ryan Ponsonby (Denton, Texas) and sophomores Joseph Davis (San Antonio, Texas), Kyle Miller (Katy, Texas), and Leonel Manzano (Marble Falls, Texas) picked up Texas' first DMR win at the Texas Relays since 1948, winning the event in 9:48.56. Junior Andra Manson (Brenham, Texas) added a victory in the high jump with a clearance of 7-4.50. Texas sits at No. 5 in the USTFCCCA (U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association) and Trackwire.com rankings. Several Longhorns rank among the nation's best in their respective events. Hardee ranks first in the decathlon, while junior Donovan Kilmartin (Eagle, Idaho) ranks third. UT's 4x100-meter relay quartet of seniors Quincy Boles (Harker Heights, Texas) and Ronald Hill (Walnut, Calif.), freshman Jamaal Charles (Port Arthur, Texas) and senior Trey Griffin (Lockhart, Texas) ranks fifth in the nation. Manson ranks fourth in the high jump, while sophomore Joel Hargett (Conroe, Texas) ranks 11th. Charles owns the nation's sixth-fastest 100-meter time at 10.18, while Hardee comes in at No. 16 at 10.35, which he clocked during his record-setting decathlon performance. He also owns the eighth-best mark in the long jump at 25-3.25 (7.70m), and the 13th-fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles at 13.83. Senior Brian Robison (Splendora, Texas) ranks eighth in the shot put and 11th in the discus, and sophomore Derek Randall (Beeville, Texas) holds the 16th slot in the discus.
