Ryan Dohner Q&A
April 19, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas -- TexasSports.com sat down with sophomore distance runner Ryan Dohner to talk about various things such as what he thinks about during the race and what game he is playing on his phone. What is your strategy for running the 10k? I have never ran the 10k on the track, I have only ran it in cross country but my strategy will be to stay as close to the rail as possible, so I can use the least amount of energy as possible, then to move up in the race so I can be up at the front at the end. What do you consider to be the most important aspect in running long distances? I think the mental aspect is the most important because there are guys that have endurance but if the other person is more mentally tough he will always be the one that comes out on top. Even if he is less physically fit than the competitors, the mental guy will always do better. What are your mental thoughts during the race? Mentally, when I am in the race I like to take my mind out of the race. So I try to focus on a place that keeps me in positive thoughts. I think of places I have been that are positive; pretty places. Usually it is mountain places, but sometimes I think about past events I have done well in. Past experiences in my mind help me to stay positive. What has been your most memorable moment at Texas? Last year at conference in the 5k is my most memorable moment. I was really focused. I ran on a stress-facture and still ended up getting fourth in the event. At that event I surprised myself with my strength. What are your goals for this outdoor season? My goals are to score at NCAA's in the 10k and make the Olympic Trials. What are your goals for the Longhorn Invitational? My goal is to get a personal best Where is your favorite place to run in Austin? I enjoy going down by MLK and Lamar and there are these back neighborhoods
