AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas senior Trey Hardee (Birmingham, Ala.) collected accolades from USA Track and Field and the Big 12 Conference on Tuesday, April 11 after setting a new collegiate record in the decathlon last week at the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Hardee was selected as USA Track and Field's Athlete of the Week and the Big 12 Conference's Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
The reigning NCAA decathlon champion, Hardee won eight of 10 decathlon events, setting new personal bests in seven of them, to win the decathlon and set a new collegiate decathlon record on Thursday, April 6 at the Texas Relays in Austin. His final score of 8,465 topped the previous collegiate record score of 8,463 set by Tennessee's Tom Pappas in 1999.
Notably, Hardee also set new collegiate records in the decathlon's 100-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles. His wind-aided time of 13.83 in the 110-meter hurdles broke the decathlon-record time of 13.85 set by Rice's Ryan Harlan in 2004. Hardee clocked a wind-aided time of 10.35 in the 100-meter dash, breaking the 100-meter decathlon record time of 10.40 set by California's Chris Huffins in 1993.
Hardee's decathlon score of 8,465 is the highest in the world this year. His score is the eighth-highest mark recorded by an American decathlete. Bruce Jenner's gold-medal performance (8,634) at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal ranks seventh.
Hardee also set the collegiate heptathlon in January at the New Mexico Multi-Events Meet in Albuquerque. His score of 6,208 points topped the collegiate-record score of 6,136 set by teammate Donovan Kilmartin (Eagle, Idaho) at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
