Men's Track and Field's Manzano earns Big 12 Performer of the Week honors

AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Leonel Manzano was named Big 12 Performer of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office has announced. Manzano, who was named the Texas Relays Most Outstanding Collegiate Performer, set a UT and Texas Relays record in the Jerry Thompson Mile and ran the third leg of the 4x800-meter relay, which also set a school record.

In the Jerry Thompson Mile, Manzano eclipsed the 42-year-old school record with a time of 3:56.98. His time shattered the previous mark of 3:58.80, set by Richard Romo in 1966. He also eclipsed the previous meet record of 3:59.09, set by Seneca Lassiter of Arkansas in 2000.

Manzano, along with juniors Tevan Everett (first leg), Kyle Miller (second leg) and Jacob Hernandez (anchor), also set a school record in the 4x800-meter relay. Manzano's third-leg time of 1:48.9 helped the Texas squad to a 7:17.63, which snapped the 27-year-old school mark of 7:18.1 set by Larry Johnson, Chris Bucknall, George Collins and Owen Hamilton in 1981.

Manzano now holds six UT school records. Along with the outdoor mile and the 4x800-meter relay, he also set the marks in the outdoor 1,500 meters (3:35.29), outdoor distance medley relay (9:31.27), indoor mile (3:58.78) and indoor DMR (9:25.97).

The Longhorns will compete in Mike A. Myers Stadium for the last time this season at the Texas Twilight on Saturday, April 19. Field events will start at 2 p.m. with events starting on the track at 4:30 p.m.
