Webb finishes third, Washburn finishes fourth on first day of Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas -- Sophomore All-Big 12 performer Andrew Webb is in third-place after five events in the decathlon, and senior Owen Washburn finished in fourth-place in the 5,000-meter run to highlight the opening day of the 2007 80th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, April 4.

Competing in the final race of the day, Washburn (Amherst, Mass.) stormed to fourth-place in the 5,000-meter run in 14:40.90 in his first 5K of the outdoor campaign.

Webb (Midland, Texas) accumulated 3,821 points through the first five events and sits in third place. He trails UT-San Antonio's Brandon Buteaux by 50 points.

Webb won two of four decathlon events, opening the day with a victory in the 100-meter dash (10.92 seconds) and clearing 6-7.5 (2.02m) in the high jump in the final field event of the afternoon. He added a fifth-place performance in the long jump (22-6.25/6.86m), a 10th-place showing in the 400 (51.44 seconds) and a 38-6.75 (11.75m) heave in the shot put.

Also in the top 10 in the decathlon is freshman Shawn Schmidt (Plano, Texas), who sits in eighth with an opening day point total of 3,689 points. Schmidt had a solid day, winning the long jump and placing in the top 10 in two additional events. The American junior national champion in the decathlon registered a 6.1 wind-aided mark of 23-10.25 (7.27m) in taking first overall in the long jump. He ended the day with a strong fifth-place 50.88 performance in the 400-meter dash. Schmidt also tossed 40-9 (12.42m) in the shot put, cleared 5-11.25 (1.81m) in the high jump and clocked 11.42 (+2.1) in the 100-meter.

In the first open race on the track, junior Brian Sullivan (The Woodlands, Texas) registered a ninth-place finish in 9:56.03 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Freshman Chris Harkins (Austin, Texas) finished right behind him in 10:03.62.

Freshman Will Schroeder (San Antonio, Texas) followed their performances with the second fastest time in the first heat of the 800-meter, rounding the track in 1:55.47.

The second day of the Texas Relays begins tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT with the decathlon. The evening running session starts at 4:30 p.m. CT and consists of two events with multiple heats -- the 400-meter hurdle preliminary races and the 4x800-meter relays.
