Men's Track and Field preview: 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas men's and women's track and field programs welcome some of the nation's top professional, collegiate and high school track and field athletes to Austin this week for the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at UT's Mike A. Myers Stadium. The event kicks off on Wednesday, April 5 at noon with the men's decathlon and continues through Saturday evening, April 8.

Texas captured three events and registered 12 NCAA regional marks at the 2005 event. Ryan Wilson (Wichita, Kan.) won his section of the 3000-meter steeplechase and Leonel Manzano (Marble Falls, Texas) claimed the mile. Trey Hardee (Birmingham, Ala.) led a one-two UT finish in the heptathlon, while Donovan Kilmartin (Eagle, Idaho) took second place.

Former UT men's track and field coach Clyde Littlefield initiated the Texas Relays in 1925 upon completion of Memorial Stadium, now known as Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. A 12-time UT letterwinner in football, basketball and track and field, Littlefield has been labeled as the most dominant Longhorn through the first 20 years of Texas intercollegiate athletics. He went on to coach the UT men's track and field program for 41 seasons, retiring in 1961. Littlefield passed away in 1981 at the age of 88.

Now in its 79th running, the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays annually attract some of the world's finest athletes, including such names as Carl Lewis and Maurice Greene in recent years.

Fans may purchase tickets by visiting TexasBoxOffice.com or by calling (800) 982-2386 or (512) 471-3333. Reserved seats (lower east stadium) for Friday's and Saturday's sessions may be purchased at $15 apiece, while general admission is $10. Admission is free on Wednesday and Thursday.
