HOUSTON -- The Texas men's track and field team won the Rice Bayou Classic on Saturday, April 2, while the women's team finished second. The Longhorn men tallied 68.50 points to beat Texas A&M-Kingsville by 5.5 points and the women's team scored 120.50 points to finish just .5 behind host Rice.
The UT men won three events on the day including freshman Hamza Deyaf's (Richardson, Texas) victory in the 400-meter hurdles with a regional-qualifying 51.22. Sophomore Andra Manson (Brenham, Texas) posted a regional qualifier for the second-straight week in winning the high jump with a leap of 6-10.75. Junior Brandon Mahler (Seagraves, Texas) notched a regional qualifier of his own with a jump of 16-6.75 in winning the pole vault.
The Longhorn men produced seven other top five finishes, which were highlighted by junior Ronald Hill's (Walnut, Calif.) third-place finish in the long jump (23-4.50), sophomore Jonathan Brown's (Houston, Texas) fourth-place finish in the 800 meters (1:51.93) and redshirt freshman John Rouse's (Kaufman, Texas) fourth-place finish in the hammer throw (155-8).
The women's team won two events with sophomore Jerrika Chapple (Lancaster, Texas) taking the 400 meters in a regional-qualifying 53.88, while freshman Temeka Kincy (Indianapolis, Ind.) was victorious in the 800 meters with a personal-best 2:10.20.
UT posted four other regional qualifiers on the day. Sophomore Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas) notched two regional qualifiers in finishing second in the shot put (53-7) and fifth in the discus (155-3). Sophomore Marshevet Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) came in second in the 400 meters (54.38) and junior Sheretta Jones (Houston, Texas) placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.45.
The Longhorn women had 10 other top five finishes including runner-up performances from junior LaTashia Kerr (Houston, Texas) in the 100 meters (12.00), junior Melaine Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) in the 200 meters (23.99) and freshman Alandra Sherman (Houston, Texas) in the 100-meter hurdles (14.27).
Both Longhorn squads will now prepare for the 78th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, which will take place from Wed., April 6 to Sat., April 9 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
