AUSTIN, Texas -- In its first of four home outdoor meets during the 2006 season, Texas collected 11 NCAA regional-qualifying marks and nine victories Saturday at the Texas Invitational at UT's Mike A. Myers Stadium. Seniors Quincy Boles (Harker Heights, Texas) and Brian Robison (Splendora, Texas) earned two victories and two NCAA regional marks apiece to lead the Longhorns.
Boles edged teammate Trey Griffin (Lockhart, Texas) by one one-hundredth of a second to capture the 100 meters, clocking a NCAA regional-qualifying time of 10.41. Griffin's mark of 10.42 also was good for a NCAA regional mark. Boles also shattered his personal best in the 200 meters, winning the event in 21.06, good for another NCAA regional-qualifying mark.
Robison set a new personal best in the discus with a toss of 190-1, eclipsing the NCAA regional mark by over six meters to capture the event. Sophomore Derek Randall (Beeville, Texas) took second with a NCAA regional-qualifying mark of 184-2. Robison also claimed the shot put with a NCAA regional-qualifying mark of 62-1.75.
Junior Donovan Kilmartin (Eagle, Idaho) captured the pole vault by one foot, winning with a NCAA regional mark of 17-0.75. Texas' 4x100-meter relay quartet added a first-place finish in 39.81, good its second NCAA regional mark in as many weeks.
Senior Joe Thorne (Chamblee, Ga.) took first in the 1500 meters, edging unattached runner Aaron Stanzel in 3:52.65. Sophomore Jake Morse (Arlington, Texas) led a one-two-three Longhorns finish in the 2000-meter steeplechase, winning the event in a personal-best time of 5:44.31. Senior Mark Floreani (Chicago, Ill.) took second in 5:46.75, while senior Jeff Cutrer (Nederland, Texas) placed third in 5:50.49.
Sophomore Hamza Deyaf (Richardson, Texas) fell just shy of victory in the 400-meter hurdles, but he collected a NCAA regional mark for his efforts, clocking 52.06. Junior Alan Bean (Dalhart, Texas) followed closely behind in third at 52.92.
Sophomore Joel Hargett (Conroe, Texas) raised his personal best in the high jump for the second time in as many meets, clearing 7-0.50 to take third place and post the top collegiate mark in the event. Hargett cleared a then-personal best of 6-10.75 at the Hurricane Invitational on March 18 in Miami.
Other top Longhorn finishes included a second-place showing in the 800 meters from senior Ryan Ponsonby (Denton, Texas) and a second-place finish in the long jump by senior Ronald Hill (Walnut, Calif.). Sophomore John Rouse (Kaufman, Texas) added a third-place finish in the hammer throw.
