Kilmartin leads heptathlon on first day of NCAA Indoor Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Senior National Champion and All-American heptathlete Donovan Kilmartin (Eagle, Idaho) tied for first in the high jump and recorded three additional, top-five performances on the first day (Friday, March 9) of the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Kilmartin, who is the defending champion and national leader in the event, tallied 3,316 points through the opening four events at the Randal Tyson Track and Field Center.

Kilmartin opened the day with a fifth-place performance in the 60-meter dash. He clocked 7.12 seconds for 840 points.

Heading into the strongest portion of the multi-events, Kilmartin sprung off the long jump board on all three attempts, earning the third longest jump of the group with a 23-5.25 (7.14-meter) effort. He added 847 points to his point total and moved into third-place on the scoreboard.

In the shot put, Kilmartin continued to improve in point totals jumping into second behind Tennessee's Jangy Addy with a three-event total of 2,448 points. He tallied a near-personal best mark of 47-8.5 (14.54m) in taking fourth overall in the only throwing event of the morning.

The high jump was the final event of the day and one of Kilmartin's stronger events as it gave him the lead at the end of the day. He tied for first with Clemson's Ryan Koontz in the high jump as they both cleared a height of 6-9.5 (2.07-meters) for 868 points.

In the series, he cleared 6-2.25 (1.89-meters) on his second attempt. He passed at 6-3.5 (1.92-meters) and then cleared the bar at 6-4.75 (1.95-meters) on his first try. Kilmartin continued his string of opening attempt clearances at 6-6 (1.98-meters) and 6-7 (2.01-meters). He struggled at 6-8.25 (2.04-meters) and it seemed as if his day was complete but he made it over the bar on the third try. After nailing the 6-9.5 (2.07-meters) mark on the first attempt, he missed all three tries at a height that would have been a season-best - 6-10.75 (2.10-meters)
