NCAA Indoor Championships Participant List
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Four members of the Men’s Track and Field team have been selected to participate in this weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
The NCAA announced Monday evening that Hayden Baillio (shot put), Johannes Hock (heptathlon), Keiron Stewart (60-meter hurdles) and Joe Stilin (mile) were confirmed among the top 16 athletes in their respective events.
The top 16 marks in each individual event and best 12 times in the relays earned bids to the NCAA Indoor meet which begins Friday at Arkansas’ Randal Tyson Track Center.
Baillio, a senior, is a veteran of the national meet environment, having earned three first team All-America honors (finishing among the top eight) and three second-team nods (claiming ninth through 16th place) in the shot put.
He is ranked No. 7 nationally in the shot put with his season-best toss of 64-5 (19.63m) winning the Big 12 title on Feb. 24.
Stewart has also made multiple trips to national meet. The senior has been a first team All-American four times, including when he placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in 2011.
Stewart matched his school record in the 60mh (7.66) at last month’s Tyson Invitational and ranks No. 5 in the country.
Hock and Stilin are both first-year performers for the Longhorns.
Hock jumped onto the national scene at last month’s Big 12 meet by claiming the heptathlon title with the fifth-best mark in the country this season. The freshman’s point total of 5,858 ranks 10th on the Texas all-time performance list.
Stilin is a senior who graduated from Princeton last year, but had one year of indoor eligibility left.
He set the school record in both the mile (3:58.66 at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 25) and 3,000 meters (7:56.07 at the Husky Classic on Feb. 8).
Stilin’s time in the mile ranks No. 16 on the 2013 national performance list.
The Longhorns just missed advancing in the distance medley relay. The time of 9:31.82 posted by Patrick McGregor, Zack Bilderback, Kyle Thompson and Stilin at the Razorback Invitational was ranked No. 14 nationally. Virginia claimed the 12th and final spot with its time of 9:31.23.
Sophomore Will Spence was No. 19 on the shot put list. He posted what was then a career-best toss of 61-5 (18.72m) in finishing third at the Big 12 Championships. He improved that mark by four inches at Friday’s LSU NCAA Indoor Qualifier meet. Kole Weldon of Texas Tech, who finished one spot ahead of Spence at the Big 12 meet with a toss of 62-1 3/4 (18.94m), claimed the last spot.
ESPN3 will stream the meet live from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. CST Friday and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. A tape delay of the championship will air Sunday, March 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
The Longhorns, ranked No. 9 in last week’s U. S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Computer Team Rankings, placed seventh at the 2012 NCAA Indoor meet with 22.5 points.
Head coach Bubba Thornton has led the Longhorns to a top-15 finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships during 14 of his 17 completed seasons.
