DALLAS -- University of Texas freshman Leonel Manzano (Marble Falls, Texas) was named Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Freshman Performer of the Year announced the conference on Wednesday, March 2. Manzano became only the second runner in Texas history to break the four-minute mark in the indoor mile when he crossed the finish line in 3:59.86 to win the Big 12 Championship on Saturday, Feb. 26.

Manzano's time broke Reed Fischer's record of 3:59.90, which was set at the 1974 Astrodome Federation. His time placed him eighth on the national performance list and provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which begin on Friday, March 11 in Fayetteville, Ark.
