Feb. 20, 2013

Big 12 Indoor Championhips Notes | Big 12 Indoor Championships Central | Live Results

Big 12 Championships Schedule Adjusted: The 2013 Big 12 Indoor Championships schedule has been adjusted due to the winter storm which has hit the region. The meet will now take place on Saturday and Sunday. The meet will now begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, though the times of each of event have remained the same.

Texas Heads to Big 12 Indoor Championships: The Texas Men's Track and Field team, which is No. 8 in this week's USTFCCCA computer rankings, will head to the 2013 Big 12 Indoor Championships on Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 23-24. Iowa State will serve as the host institution with the two-day meet taking place at Lied Recreation Center. There are 10 Longhorns making the trip to Ames, Iowa, who earned All-Big 12 honors at last year's indoor meet, including five-time All-American Keiron Stewart. The senior matched his own school record in the 60-meter hurdles (7.66) earlier this season. Stewart placed second in the 60m hurdles and helped the Texas 4x400m to a sixth-place finish at the 2012 Big 12 Indoor meet. Hayden Baillio, a six-time All-American, was second in the shot put and sixth in the weight throw at the 2012 Big 12 Indoor Championships. Patrick McGregor scored in both 1,000 meters (eighth) and mile (fourth) last year. Kyle Thompson was also a double scorer, earning points on the 4x400-meter relay and in the 800 meters

Texas Conference History: The Texas men's track and field team has captured 10 indoor conference titles (five SWC/five Big 12) dating back to the first Southwest Conference Championships in 1974. The Horns have won five of the 16 Big 12 crowns awarded since the league started in 1996-97 (1999, 2006, `07, `08, `09). UT's five Big 12 titles are second only to Nebraska which had won or shared nine before leaving the con. The Longhorns won or shared four straight titles from 2006-09. UT has finished in the top two at the Big 12 Indoor meet 10 times.

Individual Conference History:  The UT men have captured 108 individual or relay indoor league crowns since the first Southwest Conference meet was held in 1974. UT has won titles in a variety of events, but in the high jump and pole vault alone, the Longhorns boast 23 league crowns. Texas has also captured seven distance medley crowns, including four straight from 2006-09, and seven shot put titles. Ryan Crouser is the defending indoor shot put champion, but the sophomore is redshirting during the indoor season.

Stewart Solid Out of the Gate: Senior hurdler Keiron Stewart was named Big 12 Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 16 and has not looked back. Stewart ranks No. 1 in the conference and fourth nationally after posting a time of 7.66 in the 60-meter hurdles championship two weeks ago at the Tyson Invitational. The time matched Stewart's own school record which he set in winning the 2011 Big 12 title. He owns six of the top eight 60mh times in UT history.

National Leaders: Texas' distance medley has held on to the top time in the nation for the last month. The unit of Patrick McGregor, Zack Bilderback, Kyle Thompson, and Joe Stilin posted a time of 9:31.82 in cruising to a victory at the Razorback Team Invitational on Jan. 25. That time ranks fourth in school history and was the fastest since Jacob Hernandez, Danzell Fortson, Mike Carmody and Jake Morse clocked a 9:30.77 at the 2009 Alex Wilson Invitational. This year's time is also almost four seconds faster than Notre Dame's winning time (9:35.48) at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships. Texas owns the collegiate record in event (9:25.97), setting it at the 2008 Tyson Invitational.

Stilin's Record-Setting First Year: Senior Joe Stilin set school records in the mile and 3,000 meters this season. Stilin's time of 3:58.66 at the Razorback Team Invitational on Jan. 26 broke Leo Manzano's mark of 3:58.78 that stood since 2007. A first-year graduate transfer from Princeton, Stilin went on to claim the Texas record in the 3,000m with a time of 7:56.06 at the Husky Classic (Feb. 9). Stilin will take part in both the mile and 3,000 at the Big 12 meet.

Going the Distance: The Longhorns have some of the best times in the conference in the 5,000 meters. Junior Ryan Dohner completed the event in a career-best 13:52.85 at the Hoosier Open in December. That time ranks fifth in the Big 12, as well as 20th nationally. Sophomore Will Nation holds the No. 6 spot in the conference with season-best time of 14:11.27. Craig Lutz will join Dohner and Nation in Friday's race, though he has yet to compete in an indoor 5,000.

Final Throws: Senior Hayden Baillio is no stranger to the conference championship meet. He has competed in the indoor shot put on three occasions, finishing second (2010), third (2011) and second (2012). The three-time first team All-American will take his final throws of his indoor collegiate career this weekend. He enters the competition with wins in each of the four shot put event competed this season. Baillio's toss of 63-7.75 (19.40m) earlier this month at the Collegiate Armory Invitational is the top mark in the league. Sophomore Will Spence posted a personal-best 60-6.75 (18.46m) at the Tyson Invitational and ranks third in the Big 12.

Three is the Magic Number: Third-ranked Big 12 triple jumper Jarard Bruner will make this third appearance at the Big 12 Indoor Championships this weekend. Last season, he earned his first All-Big 12 honor with a fifth-place finish (49-5.50/15.07m).
