Men's Track & Field to split squad for weekend meets

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Men's Track & Field team will divide its team this weekend, competing at both the Don Kirby Invite in Albuquerque, N.M. and the SPIRE Invitational in Geneva, Ohio.

The majority of the team will head to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque for the Don Kirby Invite Friday and Saturday. Friday's action will begin at 2:15 p.m. with the field events at the Albuquerque Convention Center. No. 4 Texas will be joined by No. 2 Florida and No. 7 Stanford at the meet.

Some performers to watch this weekend in New Mexico include Marquis Goodwin (60m and 4x400m relay), Maston Wallace (pole vault) and Jacob Thormaehlen (shot put and weight throw). Multi-event specialist Isaac Murphy is scheduled to compete in the 60m hurdles, 4x400m relay, long jump and pole vault. Goodwin will go head-to-head with Florida track star and two-time NCAA champion Jeff Demps in the 60m dash. Thormaehlen is one of the top throwers nationally and will compete against Florida's Kemal Mesic, who has the top throw nationally in the shot put this season at just over 66-7.

The Longhorns will have several runners at the SPIRE Invitational. Craig Lutz, Ryan Dohner, Will Nation, Collin Smith and Mark Pinales will all compete in the 3000m while Nation, Pinales and Smith will also run the 5000m. Patrick McGregor is the fourth seed in the mile and will be joined in the race by C.J. Jessett, Kevin Rayes and John McNamara. Freshman Sheroid Evans will compete in the 200m and 400m while Kyle Thompson and Rayes are scheduled to run the 800m.  


 

 

The SPIRE Invitational take place Friday and Saturday and will include 17 men's teams. It will take place at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The ranked teams that will be competing include No. 6 Florida State, No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 12 Indiana and No. 23 Auburn.

This will be the final weekend of competition for the Longhorns before the Big 12 Championships Feb. 24-25 in College Station, Texas.
