Hill's long jump victory caps solid day for Men's Track and Field at New Balance Collegiate Invitational

NEW YORK -- University of Texas senior Ronald Hill (Walnut, Calif.) recorded a personal best and NCAA provisional-qualifying distance of 7.71 meters to capture the long jump on a productive day one for the Longhorns at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. Hill was one of five Longhorns to register NCAA provisional marks and earn top-five event finishes.

Hill claimed the long jump by three one-hundredths of a meter over his nearest competitor, Illinois' Nick Brown. Hill topped his previous personal best by nearly one-fourth of a meter, while senior Trey Hardee added an NCAA provisional mark of 7.53 meters, good for fifth place.

Senior Quincy Boles (Harker Heights, Texas) nearly stole the show at Friday evening's 60-meter final at Madison Square Garden after placing fifth in the preliminary round. Joined in the final by fellow UT senior Trey Griffin (Lockhart, Texas) and Hill, Boles tied with LSU's Kelly Willie and Texas A&M's Tyrone Edgar in the final with a time of 6.68 seconds.

As the times were extended to one-thousandths of a second, Willie took first in 6.672, while Boles took second in 6.674 and Edgar placed third in 6.679. The mark of 6.68 seconds gives Boles a personal best, an NCAA provisional mark and a spot among the nation's five fastest 60-meter runners this season.

Hardee lowered his personal-best time in the 60-meter hurdles to 7.81 seconds, and, in doing so, became the second-fastest 60-meter hurdler in UT history. Hardee sat in second place after the preliminary round but dropped to fourth in the finals. Freshman Trevor Gerland (Katy, Texas) added a personal-best time of 7.89 seconds.

Senior Brian Robison (Splendora, Texas) chipped in a fourth-place, season-best toss of 17.81 meters in the shot put, while senior Jeff Cutrer (Nederland, Texas) placed fourth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:15.61. Senior Joe Thorne (Chamblee, Ga.) who set a new UT 3,000-meters record with a time of 7:59.25 at last weekend's Terrier Classic at Boston University, did not participate in Friday's 3,000-meter event.

The second and final day of competition begins Saturday at 7:45 a.m. CST.
