Men's Track and Field preview: United Heritage Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas men's track and field team visits the campus of Boise State for the 2008 United Heritage Track and Field Invitational at Jackson Indoor Arena in Nampa, Idaho.

Horns performance at Razorback Invitational The Longhorns put on a show at the Razorback Invitational. Freshman Maston Wallace and sophomore Will Paine, both natives of Houston, Texas, cleared season-best heights (16-10.75) in taking second and third, respectively.

Freshman Logan Gonzalez (Boone, Iowa) finished second in the fastest 800 of any Longhorn runner this year (1:54.15). Fellow rookie Danzell Fortson (Fort Worth, Texas) ran a season-low 47.68 in the 400 for ninth overall and fifth among college runners in the race. Redshirt sophomore Nick Baucum (Robstown, Texas) continued to improve his personal best in the shot put, tossing 51-1.5 (15.58m) for third place. Redshirt freshman Brandon Birdsong (Lubbock, Texas) shaved 27 seconds off his lifetime best in the 5,000-meter, running 14:44.19. 

Big 12 Leaders (All flat times are converted to banked; Top five in conference rankings) Fortson is fifth overall and the fastest freshman in the 400-meter dash (48.31)... Birdsong is second in the 5K (14:44.19). Classmate Habben Berhane (Dallas, Texas) is fourth overall in 5,000-meter run (15:04.59) after leading the conference last week... Junior Elliot O'Hare (Austin, Texas) is third in the 60-meter hurdles (7.96)... Senior Joel Hargett (Conroe, Texas) and junior Raymond Harris (Nacogdoches, Texas) share the fifth highest mark in the high jump (7-0.25)... Sophomore Will Paine (Houston, Texas) and rookie Maston Wallace (Houston, Texas) cleared the fourth-highest height in the Big 12 this year at 16-10.75. They have the highest clearance of all non-NCAA qualifiers in the Big 12... Freshman Devon Bond (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) is fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 49-0.25 (14.94m)... Senior Joseph Davis (San Antonio, Texas) is fifth in the triple (48-8.25/14.84m) after leading the league last week.... The 4x400-meter relay is fourth overall after running 3:11.05 at the Razorback Invitational... The distance medley relay improved to second in the league (9:56.42) at the Razorback Invitational.

Poll History

The Longhorns enter this season ranked No. 18 in the preseason rankings. Arkansas stands at the top of the ratings ahead of No. 2 Tennessee, No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 4 Boise State and No. 5 Texas Tech. In the poll released on Wednesday, Jan. 30, Texas dropped out of the national rankings.

Hargett and Harris make NCAA provisional standard The list of Texas automatic and provisional qualifiers stands at two individuals through three meets this season. Longhorn high jumpers Hargett and Harris met the NCAA provisional mark at the Houston Indoor Opener. They cleared 7-0.25 (2.14m) and are among 22 student-athletes in the nation to clear the provisional standard of 7-0.25 (2.14m).

Birdsong shaves seconds off distance personal record Through the first month of the season, Birdsong showed off his hard work and training. Entering the season with a 5,000-meter, personal-best time of 15:29.70 from the Leonard Hilton Memorial in January of 2007, he took 18 seconds off that time with his season-opening performance of 15:11.91 at the Houston Indoor Opener. Two weeks later, he posted a sub-15 minute run, clocking 14:44.19 at the Razorback Invitational.

Baucum boosts shot put

Baucum, the Horns' leading shot putter, has tossed over 50-feet, five inches in each of three outings this season. He opened the season with a 50-5.25 (15.37m) for third at the Houston Indoor Opener. He followed that performance with a toss of 50-7.25 (15.42m) for seventh at the Leonard Hilton. At the Razorback Invitational, Baucum set a new career best with his 51-1.5 (15.58m) throw. He entered the season with a personal-best of 48-2.75 (14.70m).

Bond leads Texas triple jump
Bond, the Horns' top freshman jumper took a big step in his career, jumping 49-0.25 (14.94m) in his first collegiate triple jump. Bond, primarily a high jumper, leads the quartet of Longhorn triple jumpers and is in the top five in the Big 12.

On the Horizon: New Balance Collegiate
The Longhorns head to the 2008 New Balance Collegiate Invitational from Friday-Saturday, Feb. 8-9 at the Armory Track in New York City. Texas won the team championship last year behind event wins by Leo Manzano (mile), Andra Manson (high jump) and Davis (triple jump) and NCAA provisional performances by Darren Brown (mile) and Jake Morse (3,000m).
