SHOOTING FOR FIVE
Texas has won Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships in each of the last four seasons. The Horns' run started in 2006, when UT defeated Nebraska, 127-100. It was Texas' first indoor conference championship since 1999 and broke the Cornhuskers' string of six consecutive victories. In 2007, the Horns shared the title with Nebraska after both teams scored 93 points. Texas reclaimed sole possession of the championship in 2008, defeating Nebraska, 106-104. The Horns made it four-in-a-row when they took the 2009 title with 115 points. In the 13 years of the Big 12, only Texas (five) and Nebraska (eight) have won the conference indoor meet.
NCAA TOP 10
Texas has finished in the Top 10 at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in each of the last seven seasons. UT started the streak when they tied for ninth at the 2003 meet. Since then, the Horns have posted two third-place finishes, two fourth-place finishes and two 10th-place finishes. Prior to 2003, the Horns had only recorded two Top 10 finishes in the previous 38 seasons since the indoor national meet started in 1965.
THROWERS OPEN STRONG
Texas' throwers opened the indoor season with strong performances in dual meets with Arkansas and Texas A&M. The group of freshman Hayden Baillio, junior Brandon Drenon and sophomore Jacob Thormaehlen have all posted personal bests in both the shot put and the weight throw. In the first collegiate meet of his career at Arkansas, Baillio won both events, posting a provisional-qualifying 60-1 in the shot, while taking the weight throw with a 55-6.25. Drenon used a provisional 58-3 in the shot to finish second, while placing third in the weight throw with a 50-8.25. Thormaehlen notched a 58-1 in the shot and a 52-9.50 in the weight throw. The trio of Baillio (60-11.25), Thormaehlen (57-6.25) and Drenon (57-6.25) claimed the top three spots in the shot put again in College Station, while Thormaehlen took first place in the weight throw, posting a mark of 56-8.50.
