Men's Track & Field climbs to No. 5 in rankings

Jan. 25, 2012

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas Men's Track & Field team moved up five spots to No. 5 in the USTFCCCA rankings on Tuesday.

The Longhorns were one of seven teams ranking in the preseason top 25 to climb in the first in-season rankings and are the highest ranked team in the Big 12. The rest of the top five includes No. 1 Arkansas, No. Florida, No. 3 LSU and No. 4 Florida State.

Two throwers managed to move up the individual rankings with their NCAA qualifying performances in the first meet of the year. True freshman Ryan Crouser threw the shot put 19.72m (64-08.50) to win the event and record the fourth longest indoor throw in school history. Crouser is ranked sixth nationally after his first collegiate meet. Senior Jacob Thormaehlen also qualified with a throw of 19.35m (63-06.0) to rank eighth in the country.

The Longhorns opened the season two weeks ago with an 89-81 dual meet loss at Arkansas but were without some of their top performers when they faced the current No. 1 team in the country. This weekend the team will be at near full strength when they return to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Arkansas Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
