HOUSTON -- The fourth-ranked University of Texas men's track and field squad returns to the site of its last meet - the University of Houston's Yeoman Field House - for its first scored meet of the season, the 12-team Leonard Hilton Invitational. The action begins Friday at 2 p.m. CST in Houston.
"We're looking forward to seeing some of the newcomers perform," said UT coach Bubba Thornton. "I hope to see some continued improvement in some of the other events, as well."
UT returns to Houston on the heels of a successful season-opening meet at UH, the Houston Indoor Opener held on Saturday, Jan. 14. Texas' six victories were highlighted by junior Andra Manson's (Brenham, Texas) record-breaking leap in the high jump.
Manson's jump of 7-5 _ (2.28 meters) broke the Yeoman Field House record of 7-5 and topped the meet record of 7-4 _. As a result, Manson is believed to own the world's best mark in the men's indoor high jump early on in 2006.
After only about a week of preparation, senior Brian Robison (Splendora, Texas) recorded an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark in the shot put, winning the event with a toss of 58-6 _ (17.84 meters). Senior Quincy Boles (Harker Heights, Texas) added a win in the 55 meters, and sophomore John Rouse (Kaufman, Texas) took first in the weight throw.
Junior Matt Munoz (Kingwood, Texas) claimed the mile, and UT's distance-medley relay squad edged Baylor for top honors.
Texas placed second at the 2005 Leonard Hilton Invitational.
