Manzano moves on to 1500m final

June 29, 2012

EUGENE, Ore. -- Former Longhorn Leo Manzano advanced to the final of the men's 1500m with a second-place overall finish in the semifinal round on Friday at Hayward Field.

Manzano placed second in his heat in 3:41.90 and secured an automatic qualification for Sunday's final. Racing at the front of the pack heading into the second lap, Manzano moved into a battle for the heat's top spot heading into the third.  He took the lead with 400 meters to go but was challenged by Matthew Centrowitz down the final stretch.  The race was decided at the finish line with Centrowitz edging Manzano by just five thousandths of a second.

On Sunday, Manzano will look to place in the top three and qualify for his second Olympics.  In 2008, he followed an NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 1500m with a runner-up finish in the event at Trials to earn a spot on his first Olympic Team.  He went on to place 12th in the semifinals at the Beijing Olympic Games.

The 1500m final will take place on Sunday at 4:37 p.m. Pacific with NBC carrying live coverage from 4-5 p.m. Pacific.
