Manzano advances to 1500m semifinals with third-place finish
June 28, 2012 EUGENE, Ore. -- The second half of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials began Thursday with former Longhorn Leo Manzano moving on to the semifinal of the 1500m at Hayward Field. Manzano grabbed second place in the quickest of the three heats to qualify third overall for the event semifinals in a time of 3:40.91. After settling in at the back of the pack for the first lap, Manzano made his move toward the front at the 400-meter mark. He traded positions within the top five for the remainder of the race among the tightly-packed group of runners before kicking in the final 300 meters to earn second place in his heat. The 2008 Texas graduate will look to move on to Sunday's final and advance to his second Olympic Games after finishing as the 1500m runner-up at the 2008 Trials. Manzano went on to place 12th in the semifinals in Beijing. He will also look to join Marquise Goodwin (long jump) and Trey Hardee (decathlon) on Team USA in London as the last Longhorn on the men's side to compete at the 2012 Trials.
