May 25, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior Marquise Goodwin gained the final spot going to Nationals in the 100m dash to give Texas eight qualifiers for Nationals thus far at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin. "Marquise Goodwin, again showed why we call him Mr.Clutch, with getting the 12th spot in the National meet," said head coach Bubba Thornton. "Once you get to the National meet anything can happen, just as anything happened here. We got Keiron Stewart through a set of hurdles today. He looked really good for the first full race in three and a half weeks. We feel like he is back on track. Austin Roth had a great experience tonight and hopefully that will have great dividends in years to come. He ran a very good race and I was pleased." Marquise Goodwin extended his impressive weekend. After making Nationals in the long jump on Thursday he added to his list of events by qualifying for Nationals in the 100m dash on Friday. He ran a 10.35 to claim the final spot amongst the 12 runners who will move on. "It wasn't my best run but I am happy to be going on to Nationals," said Goodwin. "I also have the 4x100 relay tomorrow. I'll have to reenergize and refocus. Today I didn't get out well, I popped up too fast. I'll just continue to run and keep training." In the first running event of the evening, junior Keiron Stewart started things off by winning the opening heat with a time of 13.64. The time was his second fastest of the year. He was the fifth fastest overall in the first round and will move on to the quarterfinals. "I got a really great start on the first (gun), but the execution was still the same (on the second)," said Stewart. "I was focused on the second one just as much as the first one. It was a good race. I'm happy (with) 13.6. I just need to keep the same focus at the National meet." Sophomore Austin Roth finished with a time of 9:01.46 for 19th place in the 3,000m steeplechase. Trevante Rhodes ran in the 200m first round. He came in 32nd overall with a time of 21.47. Freshman Kyle Thompson ran in the 800m quarterfinals on Friday and clocked a time of 1:52.95 for 23rd overall. The final day of the meet will be Saturday. The first event of the day is the men's discus at 11 a.m. The running events will kick off at 6 p.m. with the 4x100m relay. Other events include the men's pole vault, women's hammer throw, men's high jump, women's triple jump, 1,500m run, 110m and 100m hurdles, 200m dash, 5,000m run and 4x400m relay.
