Murphy in fifth after five events of decathlon at Big 12 Championships

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Redshirt freshman Isaac Murphy scored 3,705 points and sits in fifth place after the first day of the decathlon as the Texas men's track and field team opened competition at the Big 12 Championships on Friday. Murphy opened with a 10.90 in the 100 meters, the third-fastest time on the day, for 883 points. He followed that with a leap of 22-3 in the long jump for 762 points. After scoring 614 points in the shot put with a mark of 39-9.25, Murphy cleared 5-9.75 in the high jump for 602 points. He finished the day by finishing fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 49.63 to score 832 points. Sophomore Jacob Thormaehlen competed in the first of his three events, the hammer throw, on Friday and posted a new personal best. Thormaehlen's toss of 176-1 placed him 13th, but showed his continued improvement in the event. After entering the season with a personal best of 115-0, he has eclipsed his PR in each of his four meets. Thormaehlen opened the season with a 151-7 at the Hurricane Invitational before posting a 159-2 at the Arkansas Dual Meet. Then, at the Texas Invite, he jumped to 172-10.
