NORMAN, Okla. - The Texas Men's Track and Field team kicked off the Big 12 Championships with strong performances from its three decathletes, sophomore Isaac Murphy, junior Kenny Greaves and freshman Jake Wohlford. After the first five events, Murphy sits in fourth place with a point total of 3,877, while Greaves is in sixth with 3,754 points and Wohlford is eighth at 3,699 points.

For Greaves and Wohlford, the totals are career first day bests. Murphy is just off the pace of his best first day total from the Texas Relays this year where he had 3,907 points after five events.

The Longhorns started the day off strong in the first event, the 100 meters where Isaac Murphy clocked the top time with a 10.74 and Wohlford finished second in 10.83. Greaves clocked 11.43. Each time was aided by the wind, which was swirling throughout the day.

The next event was the long jump where Wohlford jumped a wind-aided 22-5.75 (6.85), Murphy posted a legal mark of 21-11.75 (6.70m) and Greaves jumped a wind-aided 21-9.50 (6.64m).

In the shot put, all three set personal bests. The top mark of the group came from Greaves who tossed a mark of 42-8 (13.00m), eclipsing his previous best of 41-5.75. Murphy threw 41-11.50 (12.79m) and Wohlford posted a mark of 36-9.25 (11.22m).

Both Greaves and Murphy also cleared personal bests in the high jump, while Wohlford equaled his previous best. Greaves cleared 6-4 (1.93m), Murphy went over 6-1.50 (1.87m) and Wohlford jumped 5-10 (1.78m).

In the fifth and final event of the first day of competition for the decathlon, the 400 meters, the Texas decathletes went 1-3-4 as Murphy clocked the day's best time of 48.74, a personal best. Wohlford came in third with a personal-best time of 49.17 and Greaves just missed a PR, finishing fourth in a time of 49.22.

Concluding the day was the 10,000 meters where freshman Will Nation finished 11th in the first 10K of his collegiate career, clocking 30:29.40. Senior Habben Berhane finished 12th in a personal-best time of 30:34.84.

The decathletes will begin the competition at the Big 12 Championships on Saturday starting with the 110-meter hurdles at 10:00 a.m. CT, followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and concluding the 10-event competition with the 1,500 meters. TEXAS QUOTES

Head Coach Bubba Thornton
On the team's performance: We had some good performances by the guys in the multi events. Kenny Greaves is actually ahead of where he was at the Texas Relays. There should be some confidence there. We saw some personal bests in some of the event areas - the high jump for Kenny and Isaac, Jake in the long jump and the shot. It was a good day for those guys, and we'll have to work hard in some other events.
