Tevan Everett among 17 regional qualifiers at Texas Invite, Cardinal Invitational
May 2, 2009 AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Tevan Everett recorded a personal best en route to winning the 800 meters with a time of 1:47.39, the nation's fastest time so far this season, at the Texas Invite on Saturday evening. Everett was paced by his brother Tevas, who also posted a personal best in the event with a 1:48.58. Everett was among three winners and 11 regional-qualifiers for the Longhorns in Austin, while senior Jake Morse led a group of six distance runners who notched four regional marks at the Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Morse, who was running his first 3,000-meter Steeplechase of the season, clocked a regional-qualifying 8:34.57 to finish fifth in Section 1, but first among collegians. His time is the fastest in the nation by almost five seconds. Also in Palo Alto, senior Kyle Miller notched a qualifier in the 1,500 meters with a 3:47.58, junior Victor Gras posted a regional-qualifying 14:08.97 in the 5K and sophomore Rob Wetzel posted his first regional mark with a 9:02.38 in the second section of the Steeple. In Texas, the 4x100-meter relay team, comprised of freshmen Trevante Rhodes and Dereck Dryer, and sophomores Andre Thomas and Danzell Fortson, ran a season-best 40.54 to place second in the event. Saturday marked the first regional-qualifying time for Texas' 4x100-meter relay this season. The relay was part of the best day of Rhodes' young outdoor career, as he posted a regional-qualifying time of 21.29 in the 200 meters as well as a mark of 10.37 in the 100 meters, both personal bests. Freshman Rob Gibson won his first 3,000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best time of 9:40.66. In the field events, freshman Jacob Thormaehlen won his first shot put as a collegian, posting a throw of 17.69m (58-0 ½), a regional-qualifying mark. Sophomore Devon Bond and senior Raymond Harris each jumped to a regional-qualifying height of 2.14m (7-0 ¼) in high jump. The mark was a personal best for Bond. Junior Brandon Drenon recorded a personal-best throw of 54.23m (177-11) in the discus, a regional-qualifying mark, to place third. In pole vault, sophomore Maston Wallace placed second in pole vault with a mark of 5.40m (17-8 ½), a regional-qualifying mark. Senior Dustin Bynum also posted a regional-qualifying mark, placing fourth in javelin with a throw of 61.64m (202-2), his second best throw of the season.
