PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Sophomore All-Americans Hayden Baillio and Marquise Goodwin led the Texas Men's Track and Field team with event victories on the second day of the 2011 Penn Relays. Baillio took the top spot in the shot put championship with a personal-best throw of 64-0.25 (19.51m). The mark is the second-best in the nation this season and places Baillio sixth on UT's all-time performers list.
Goodwin was victorious in the long jump championship with a wind-aided jump of 26-3.50 (8.01m).
Junior Jacob Thormaehlen also threw over 60 feet in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 61-4.25 (18.70m), placing third. Baillio and Thormaehlen also participated in the college section of the discus throw where Baillio placed fifth (168-2/51.26m) and Thormaehlen finished 16th (157-4/47.98m).
The Texas men qualified two relays for tomorrow's championship sections as the 4x100-meter relay of Alex Williams, Trevante Rhodes, Goodwin and D.J. Monroe clocked a 40.27, qualifying seventh and the 4x400-meter relay of Andre Thomas, Danzell Fortson, Keiron Stewart and Isaac Murphy posted a time of 3:09.63 to qualify eighth. The eight fastest times in each relay qualify for the Penn Relays Championship sections.
In addition to his role on the 4x4, Stewart clocked a 110-meter hurdles time of 13.90 to qualify for tomorrow's final. Freshman Jake Wohlford clocked 14.62 in the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles and finished 32nd in the 400-meter hurdles championship in a time of 53.75.
The Texas men will resume competition on the final day of the Penn Relays tomorrow beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT as Jacob Thormaehlen participates in the college hammer throw.
