Morse wins Jerry Thompson Mile on final day of Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Jake Morse became the second consecutive Longhorn to win the Jerry Thompson Mile on the final day of the 2009 82nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays presented by State Farm. One year after Leo Manzano set the meet and stadium record in the event (3:56.98), Morse posted a 4:01.38 to win by almost two seconds.
The Horns posted two runner-up finishes in field events behind sophomore Maston Wallace in the pole vault and junior Brandon Drenon in the shot put. Wallace notched a personal best of 5.55m (18-2.50), bettering his previous mark of 5.50m (18-0.50), which he set in winning last year's national title. Drenon tied for second in the shot with a regional mark of 18.14m (59-6.25), bettering his previous mark of 54-6 by over five feet.
In the high jump, senior Raymond Harris cleared 7-2.25 (2.19m) to finish fourth and second out of collegians. Harris came close to setting a new personal best but was unable to get over at 2.23m.
In other events on the track, freshman Trevante Rhodes used a regional mark of 10.41 to finish fifth in the university 100 meters, while senior Elliot O'Hare placed sixth in the university 110-meter hurdles in 13.96. The distance medley relay of sophomores Logan Gonzales and Danzell Fortson, freshman Patrick Todd and senior Kyle Miller finished third with a time of 9:52.58.
