Men's Track & Field falls to UCLA in first outdoor meet

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Texas Men’s Track & Field team opened the 2012 outdoor season with an 85-77 dual meet loss to UCLA on Saturday. The Longhorns won nine events, including two relays, five running contests and two field events. The 100 ended up being a strong race for UT as they started the 2012 outdoor campaign. The 4x100m relay group of Alex Williams, Marquise Goodwin, Keiron Stewart and Trevante Rhodes posted a first place time of 39.61, setting a meet record in the process. Goodwin also won the 100m dash with a 10.58 and was followed by Emerson Sanders in second (10.64), Rhodes in third (10.68), Aaron Scott in fifth (10.78) and Williams in sixth (10.88). Also racing in the 4x100m relay, Mark Jackson, Scott, Sanders and Isaac Murphy went 39.83 for the third best time. The 4x400m relay team also picked up a win for the Longhorns. Kyle Thompson, Josh Brudnick, Stewart and Dereck Dreyer combined to record a time of 3:14.60.
UT had the top two finishers in the 1,500m run. Sophomore C.J. Jessett claimed the top spot at 3:50.76 while Patrick McGregor was close behind with a 3:51.03 for second. Thompson was victorious in the 800m run with a time of 1:50.11. Also running in the race was Kevin Rayes, who went 1:52.06 for fourth. Sophomore Austin Roth took the victory in the 3000m steeplechase to start off the running events. He clocked an 8:57.00 to lead the pack while teammate Collin Smith was third with a 9:23.86. Jackson won the long jump with a mark of 24-01.50 (7.35m). Sanders was third in the event with a 23-03.25 (7.09m). Jacob Thormaehlen led the Texas throwers. He won the shot put with a toss of 64-05.75 (19.65m), finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 185-2 (56.44m) and was fifth in the discus with a 167-4 (51.0m). Also in the hammer throw, Will Spence threw 142-9 (43.52m) and Blake Jakobsson had a mark of 137-0 (41.75m). Spence added a third place finish in the shot put with a throw of 56-06.50 (17.23m) and a third place throw of 176-2 (53.7m) in the discus. Jakobsson took fourth in the discus with a 170-11 (52.10m). Sophomore Mark Thomas took second place in the pole vault as he cleared a height of 16-04.75 (5.00m). Hayden Clark and Casey Wicker also participated only failed to make the starting height. In other running events, Dereck Dreyer posted a 48.56 for second while Stewart was the next best finisher with a 48.65 in the 400m dash. Josh Brudnick was the only Texas runner in the 400m hurdles. He ended up fourth with a time of 55.28. In the 200m dash, Scott took third (21.64), Goodwin fifth (21.98) and Rhodes sixth (22.37). Brock Simmons made his 2012 debut with a 14:24.10 in the 5,000m run for third place. Three multi-event specialists, Kenny Greaves, Isaac Murphy and Petter Olson, competed in selected events. Olson won the 110m hurdles with a 14.54 and was fourth in the javelin (172-8, 52.62m). Murphy was second in the 110m hurdles (14.68) and seventh in the discus (137-2, 41.8m) while also running on the 4x100m relay. Greaves, who saw his first action of 2012, was fifth in the javelin (154-9, 47.17m) and fifth in the 110m hurdles (15.27). Next up for the Longhorns will be the Texas Relays next week, running March 28-31 at the Mike A. Myers Track Stadiuim in Austin.
