Men's Track and Field places seventh at New Balance Collegiate Invitational

Feb. 5, 2011

NEW YORK - The Texas track and field team wrapped up competition at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Saturday with 33 points for seventh place. Over the two-day meet, two Longhorns won events in Keiron Stewart (60-meter hurdles) and Jamal Wilson (college high jump) and three Texas athletes achieved personal-best marks.

The Horns closed the day with the 4x400-meter relay team of Danzell Fortson, Kenny Greaves, Keiron Stewart and Andre Thomas finishing fourth in a time of 3:11.45.

Fortson (47.93) and Thomas (48.41) also competed in the 400m championship, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively after qualifying for the finals on Friday.

Freshman Mark Jackson finished 12th in the championship triple jump with a mark of 47-5.25 (14.46). Senior Jamal Wilson earned a third-place finish in the college section, jumping 49-6.25 (15.09m) while sophomore Jarard Bruner finished fifth with a jump of 48-8.25 (14.84m).

Junior Jacob Thormaehlen took 23rd in the championship weight throw with a toss of 50-1 (15.28m). In the championship section of the pole vault Greaves and freshman Mark Thomas cleared 16-4.75 (5.00m) to tie for 11th while, sophomore Hayden Clark and freshman Casey Wicker cleared 15-7 (4.75) to tie for 10th place in the college section.

The Texas men return to competition next weekend at the Husky Invitational in Seattle Wash., and the New Mexico Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

POST-MEET QUOTES
Head Ccoach Bubba Thornton
On the overall meet: I think we took some really good steps forward. Any time you can come away with marks like we had with Jamal [Wilson] in the high jump and Keiron [Stewart] in the 60m hurdles, those are good marks and should guarantee those two guys to the national meet. We had continued improvement in the shot put with Jacob [Thormaehlen] and Hayden [Baillio] and D. J. Monroe had a significant improvement in his performances. We can see him coming along and the same goes for Marquise [Goodwin].We see a lot of fight in the guys and they're really trying to move this team to where it needs to be. We still have a few that aren't doing exactly what we need of them, but that will change.

If you look at what we did, we could have finished in the top three. Jamal's winning high jump would have won the championship division, giving us 10 points then you add in Marquise in the long jump and throw in our distance guys and it would have given us some solid points but we are definitely on pace.

On getting top performances at such a high-level meet: Any time you get an opportunity to compete, it is extremely important because you can't duplicate that type of competitive setting in practice. That's why it is so important for them to be really focused on what they're trying to do. I do see the the team evolving and I'm anxious to get our distance guys back on the track and watch their development.
