Baillio wins fourth consecutive shot put at New Balance Invite

NEW YORK -- Freshman Hayden Baillio led a 1-2 finish in the shot put as Texas opened competition at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City on Friday. Baillio won his fourth straight shot put event, while sophomore Jacob Thormaehlen set a big personal best to finish second. Baillio, who currently stands fifth on the national list, took the event with a put of 61-7.50. Thormaehlen wasn't far behind, finishing as the runner-up with a mark of 60-11.50, which was almost a three-foot improvement over his previous personal best. Junior Brandon Drenon took sixth with a 56-1.25. Freshman Marquise Goodwin finished eighth in the long jump after taking only one jump, which netted him a mark of 24-75. He passed on his final five jumps and decided not to run the 60 meters for precautionary reasons. Sophomore Trevante Rhodes finished sixth in the 60 meters consolation final, clocking a 6.85 after matching his personal best of 6.84 in the prelims to qualify 13th. Senior Jonathan Collins placed ninth in the 500 meters with a time of 1:04.62, while sophomore Dereck Dreyer claimed fourth in the college section of the 500 meters after clocking a 1:05.13. The Horns will return to action tomorrow with day two of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
