Men's Tennis selected to compete at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) selected the University of Texas men's tennis team Friday to participate in the annual USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships, one of two national team championship events in collegiate tennis. The event is slated for Feb. 16-19 at the Midtown Tennis Club in Chicago, Ill. "This is our first chance to play in this tournament in a few years, so it's great for our program to have earned this opportunity once again," said UT coach Michael Center, the 2006 Big 12 Conference and ITA South Central Region Coach of the Year. "We're looking forward to going to Chicago and competing alongside the nation's top teams." Texas will make its first appearance in the event since 2004, when the 16-team tournament was held in Seattle, Wash. The Longhorns suffered losses to Stanford and California before blanking Tulsa in the tournament finale. Also receiving bids to the tournament were Baylor, Duke, Georgia, Illinois, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Pennsylvania, defending NCAA Champion Pepperdine, Stanford, UCLA and Virginia. The USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships is considered the indoor equivalent of the NCAA Tennis Championships held each May. ITA Regional Rankings Released Mihailovic and Reyes Varela hold the region's No. 7 doubles ranking, while Schellenberg and freshman Josh Zavala (Amarillo, Texas) come in at No. 15.
