Helgeson advances to Texas Invitational singles final

AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas sophomore All-American Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) picked up two singles victories Saturday to move on to the finals of the Texas Invitational at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

Helgeson defeated Andrey Kumantsov of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi via walkover before eliminating his teammate, sophomore Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia), by a 6-3, 7-5 count in the semifinals. Helgeson will face Baylor's Michal Kokta in Sunday's final at 10 a.m. Mihailovic had reached the semifinal by defeating Baylor's Vladimir Portnov by a 6-4, 6-3 count in the quarterfinal.

Sophomore Luis Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) collected a pair of singles victories to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket. Barriga set aside Texas Tech's Michael Breler by a 6-3, 6-3 margin before defeating Rice's Hooney Shin, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6). He will take on Texas Tech's Caistan Rojmar in the consolation final.

Barriga and Mihailovic eliminated teammates Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.) by an 8-5 count in the doubles quarterfinals before suffering an 8-4 defeat to Texas Tech's Bojan Szumanski and Caistan Rojmar in the semifinals.
