Beale advances to semifinals of ITA Regional
AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) will play for an opportunity to qualify for the National Indoor Championships as he advanced to the semifinals of the Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Championships on Sunday, Oct. 24 at Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Beale faced junior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) in quarterfinal action and defeated his teammate, 7-6, 6-4, to advance to Monday's semifinals where he will play Lars Porschke of Baylor. Also competing in quarterfinal singles was freshman Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) who lost a tough three-set match to Jerry Makowski of Texas A&M, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2. Of the two Texas doubles teams remaining, both suffered losses in the round of 16 on Sunday. Beale and Helgeson were defeated, 9-8 (2), by Ricardo Almeida and Dennis Andrade of Texas-San Antonio, and Gubser and junior Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) posted a, 9-8 (1), loss to Rice's Ben Harknett and Tony Hearle. The final rounds of competition at the Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Championships will take place on Monday, Oct. 25 with singles at 9:00 a.m. and doubles to follow.
