Men's Tennis duo advances to ITA South Central Regional semifinals
FORT WORTH, Texas -- UT junior Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) and sophomore Miguel Reyes Varela (Cuernavaca, Mexico) scored a doubles quarterfinal victory to land a berth in the tournament semifinals Monday at the ITA South Central Regional Championships at TCU's Friedman Tennis Center.
Mihailovic and Reyes Varela were taken the distance by Rice's Jason Mok and Christoph Muller, but the Longhorn duo prevailed in the end, winning by a 9-8 margin. The Texas tandem will take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Andrei Kumantsov and Mikael Pavlov in Tuesday's semifinals.
Mihailovic also added a singles victory Monday but could not stave off elimination in the main singles draw. Mihailovic dealt Baylor's 12th-seeded Dominik Mueller a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 defeat in the quarterfinals before falling victim to SMU's Alex Skrypko, 7-5, 6-1.
UT freshman Josh Zavala (Amarillo, Texas) contributed a pair of singles victories in the singles consolation draw before falling in the finals. Zavala scored a 6-1, 6-4 win over Southeastern Louisiana's Matthieu Leboucher before dealing Rice's Mok a 6-4, 6-0 defeat in his second match. Zavala advanced to the finals where he fell to Rice's Filip Zivojinovic, 6-3, 7-6.
