COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- University of Texas junior Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas), the last Longhorn standing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) South Central Regional Championships, claimed the singles consolation bracket Sunday at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
Chodkiewicz finished off his fourth consolation opponent, Texas Arlington's Niels Buksik, by a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 count to win the draw.
Sophomore Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) and freshman Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.) nearly captured the doubles bracket but fell just shy in the end, dropping an 8-6 decision to Baylor's Joel Reckewey and Matias Zgaga in the final.
Senior Roger Gubser enjoyed a solid tournament run in the singles main draw, where he reached the semifinals before falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Raul Morant-Rivas, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The Horns return to action next weekend, Oct. 28-30, when they play host to the Texas Invitational at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin.
