Men's Tennis advances five at ITA South Central Regional Championships
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Texas advanced five student-athletes to the round of 32 in the main singles draw Saturday on the opening day of the ITA South Central Regional Championships at TCU's Friedman Tennis Center. Sophomore Miguel Reyes Varela (Cuernavaca, Mexico) defeated Rice's Jason Mok, 6-2, 6-1 before setting aside Texas A&M's John Nallon, 6-3, 6-2. He will take on SMU's Alex Skrypko in Sunday's round of 32. Sophomore Jonah Kane-West (Free Union, Va.) collected a 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 win over Texas-Arlington's Alberto Agis before defeating Lamar's David Wanja by a 6-1, 6-3 count. Kane-West will meet Texas Tech's Dimitrio Martinez on Sunday. Freshman Dimitar Kutrovsky (Sofia, Bulgaria) took a first-round bye before defeating Texas A&M's Stephen Shields, 6-1, 6-0. Kutrovsky will take on Rice's Christoph Muller on Sunday. Junior Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) and freshman Rook Schellenberg (Dallas, Texas) also took advantage of first-round byes before scoring round-of-64 singles victories. Mihailovic defeated Texas A&M's Clay Donato, 6-4, 6-3, while Schellenberg dispatched Texas-San Antonio's Ty Luna, 6-0, 6-0. Mihailovic will face Texas Tech's Teddy Di Blasi in the round of 32, while Schellenberg will take on Rice's Ralph Knupfer.
