COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- University of Texas sophomore Luis Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) collected two victories to lead a productive Longhorns contingent Thursday on day one of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) South Central Regional Championships at Texas A&M.
Starting in the round of 128, Barriga defeated Xavier Godoy of Prairie View A&M, 6-1, 6-1. Barriga punched his ticket to the round of 32 by knocking off TCU's Jordan Freitas, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1.
Four other Longhorns tallied one victory each in the round of 64 to join Barriga in the round of 32. Freshman Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.) breezed by Centenary's Josh Pinto, winning 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) defeated Hetori Chaves of Texas-San Antonio, 6-1, 6-4.
Senior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) and sophomore Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) added the final two singles victories on the day. Gubser set aside Texas Tech's Christian Rojmav by a 7-5, 6-2 count, while Helgeson dealt Texas State's Teddy Diblasi a 6-2, 6-3 defeat.
The ITA South Central Regional Championships continue Friday at Texas A&M.
