Gubser and Beale advance to finals of Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational
MIDLAND, Texas -- Juniors Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) and Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) continued to dominate at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 16 as Gubser advanced to the finals in singles and will team with Beale for the doubles title. Playing in the main draw quarterfinals on Saturday morning, Gubser recorded a three-set victory over Texas Tech's Bojan Szumanski, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. He then posted a, 6-4, 6-2, victory over Sheeva Parbhu of Notre Dame in the afternoon semifinals. Gubser will face No. 24-ranked Luben Pampoulov of UCLA in Sunday's final round. In the singles consolation bracket, Beale won his first-round match against Peter Shults of Duke, 6-4, 6-1, and advanced to the semifinals after a default by his second round opponent Paul Warkentin of Arizona. After defeating Shults and Ned Samuelson of Duke, 8-5, in the doubles quarterfinals, Gubser and Beale faced Illinois' duo of Evan Zeder and Pramod Dabir in the semifinals. The Texas tandem posted an 8-5 victory en route to an appearance in Sunday's title match. The final day of competition at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational will be held on Sunday, Oct. 17.
