Gubser and Beale strong at Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational
MIDLAND, Texas -- Juniors Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) and Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) teamed to post an 8-5 victory over Notre Dame's duo of Brent D'Amico and Sheeva Parbhu on the first day of competition at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Friday, Oct. 15. The win advanced the Texas duo to the doubles quarterfinals where they will face Ned Samuelson and Peter Shults of Duke. In singles action, Gubser posted victories over Adam Loucks of USC, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, and Richard Johnson of Pepperdine, 7-6, 6-4, to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals against Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech. Beale also posted a first round singles victory over Duke's Chris Brown, 6-4, 6-4, but fell to No. 24-ranked Luben Pampoulov of UCLA in the second round, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The loss moved Beale into the singles consolation bracket where he will meet Peter Shults of Duke. Competition at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational will continue on Saturday, Oct. 16.
