DRIPPING SPRINGS, Texas -- Texas junior Jean Andersen has advanced to the singles quarterfinals at the Roger Beasley Volvo Hill Country Classic, an ATP futures event at the Polo Tennis & Fitness Club.
Andersen defeated a familiar opponent in the opening round, as he knocked off Dimitar Kutrovsky - the winningest player in Longhorns tennis history - by a 7-5, 6-4 count. He returned Thursday to knock off Tennessee senior Boris Conkic by a 7-5, 6-3 count. Andersen will meet either second-seeded Fritz Wolmarans or Texas teammate Ben Chen in Friday's quarterfinals. Chen moved on to the round of 16 after posting a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Derek Difazio.
Texas-Exes Luis Diaz Barriga and Miguel Reyes Varela hold the top seed in the doubles draw and advanced to the quarterfinals after notching a 6-4, 7-6 (6) win over Daniel Chu and Aaron Yovan. Andersen, Kutrovsky, current Longhorns Ed Corrie and Alex Hilliard and former Longhorn Josh Zavala all have reached the doubles quarterfinals.
